Ignite

Vision & Mission

To provide an inclusive and integrated approach to break down the barriers to learning for students, through specialist teaching to help students thrive academically, socially and emotionally: Ignite is for students on the SEND register with a primary need of cognition and learning, and are eligible for ‘targeted plus support’.

Students attend a full time timetable within the mainstream academy setting, as part of a dedicated small group class of students of similar need. A broad and ambitious national curriculum will be delivered, but adjusted at a developmental level, with appropriate adaptations to develop key foundation skills and broader life skills. This will sit alongside specialist interventions appropriate to individual learners.

How are they identified?

Ignite learners are students on the SEND register at the ‘targeted plus’ tier, with a primary need of cognition and learning. Students are identified through entry criteria which use learning cycle data and reading ages.

How are they supported?

Ignite offers students a timetable of a small group separate class, where teaching professionals with particular expertise deliver curriculum content that acts as a continuum to the whole school curriculum content and teaching and learning offer.

Teaching staff will use a range of evidence informed approaches to support the progress of students with cognition and learning needs. Students have access to the full academy building to attend their lessons, to maximise structural inclusion. The high quality teaching will be supported by Learning Support Assistants, deployed within the lessons to maximise the progress and support the students receive. As part of the ignite programme, students will be identified as ‘targeted plus’ students, meaning they will have access to a range of external specialist interventions where and when appropriate.

Students in this group will be a part of the same Academic Mentoring group, with an academic mentor who is a part of the Kingswood SEND team. This person will be the first point of contact for families and students within this group. As part of the whole school academic mentoring programme, students will also spend time learning broader life skills to support their social, emotional and mental health. Students will be encouraged to attend a morning STRIVE session with their academic mentor as part of the development of broader life skills.

Students still belong to the Lift Kingswood school community. Students will still have access to all areas of the school over social times, as well as all enrichment activities and opportunities during and after the school day. Students will still attend any additional curriculum activities, such as trips and careers events
